‘The Lion King’ review: Worth your time and money
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The new
adaptation of the 1994 Disney classic ‘The Lion King’ shows a lot of similarities to the
original.
The opening sequence depicts Rafiki holding Simba over Pride Rock while the animals cheer and celebrate the birth of young Simba.
Some of the differences between the two movies include a bit of a backstory on the relationship between the brothers Mufasa and Scar and Nala featuring more prominently.
With impressive visuals and a stellar cast, ‘The Lion King’ live-action remake is nothing short of beautiful.
Disney’s live remakes have not always hit the mark, but ‘The Lion King’ benefits from original music, the return of James Earl Jones and an impressive cast.
The casting of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar was a masterstroke, as he delivers one of the best performances of the movie.
Beyonce Knowles-Carter did better than expected as Nala following a general concern over her voice acting.
She and Donald Glover (Simba) share some chemistry even behind the mic.
The stars of the movie were none other than Timon and Pumba voiced by Billy Eicher and Seth Rogan. The duo provides some comedic relief in the adaptation.
The visuals were stunning and the directing superb, but a warning: Seeing Mufasa die so realistically is rather traumatising.
Bottom line? The production team did the 1994 classic justice. While it does not quite live up to the animated original it is still worth your time and money.
