Maxwell's Pretoria and Cape Town shows cancelled
South African fans hoping to see Grammy-winning soul star Maxwell perform have been left disappointed after his 2026 tour dates in Pretoria and Cape Town were cancelled.
Sad news for South African Maxwell fans...the multi-Grammy Award-winning singer will no longer be performing in South Africa this year.
The announcement was made on Monday by organisers, Vertex Events, which shared an official statement on social media confirming the cancellation.
“The much-anticipated Maxwell South African shows, scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at SunBet Arena in Pretoria and Tuesday, August 11, at Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town, have unfortunately been cancelled,” the statement read.
According to the organisers, they worked closely with Maxwell’s management to make the concerts happen, but the cancellation was due to "circumstances beyond their control".
Maxwell also addressed fans, saying the decision was a difficult one.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I'm unfortunately no longer able to perform in South Africa as planned. This decision wasn't made lightly. I sincerely apologise to everyone who was looking forward to the shows. I appreciate your understanding and continued support. I hope to be back with you all soon," he said.
Vertex Events added that there was no breach of contract between the organisers and the artist’s management. The decision to cancel the concerts was reached amicably, with both parties handling the matter professionally.
While this year’s shows will no longer go ahead, the organisers said they are hopeful of bringing Maxwell back to South Africa in 2027.
Fans who purchased tickets for either show will receive a full refund.
