Netflix announces 'Kpop Demon Hunters' sequel
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
The sequel to Netflix's most-watched movie is officially on the way.
The news is finally out: 'Kpop Demon Hunters' will get a sequel, and the next chapter will "continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together".
Netflix announced on Thursday, March 12, that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning as directors. They will also work on the script.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning," Kang said, per Tudum.
Appelhans can't wait to expand the 'Kpop Demon Hunters' universe for audiences.
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”
The animated film, a partnership between Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, debuted on the streaming platform in June 2025.
It tells the story of HUNTR/X - a K-pop girl group by day and demon hunters by night. They use music to create a barrier that protects humans from demons, such as the rival band the Saja Boys, who steal their souls.
The film was a breakout success, smashing just about every Netflix record. It is currently the most-watched movie, with over 325,100,000 views and 541,800,000 hours viewed.
'Red Notice', starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Gal Gadot, is in second place with 230, 900,000 views.
'Carry On', 'Don't Look Up', 'The Adam Project', 'Bird Box', 'Back in Action', 'Leave the World Behind', 'The Gray Man', and 'Damsel' complete the top 10.
'Kpop Demon Hunters' has won several accolades, including a Golden Globe award for 'Best Motion Picture: Animated'. It is also nominated for 'Best Animated Feature' at the 2026 Oscars.

'Kpop Demon Hunters' Songs
Songs from the 'Kpop Demon Hunters' movie have also been racking up awards. 'Golden' won 'Best Original Song' at the Golden Globes and 'Best Song for Visual Media' at the Grammys.
It is also in the running for 'Best Original Song' at the Oscars. 'Golden' was a #1 hit around the world, including on the Billboard Hot 100.
While Arden Cho, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo, voice the lead characters, Rumi, Zoey and Mira, their singing voices are performed by Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami.
The trio is set to perform their hit song at the Academy Awards on Sunday under the name Huntr/x.
"So honored and grateful to be nominated for an Oscar!" Ejae wrote on Instagram. She is finally getting her flowers after more than two decades in the industry.
"Everything happens for a reason... after 23 years filled with lots of ups and downs, every heartbreak and struggle led me to this insane day," the singer-songwriter said after her Golden Globes win.
"Thank you so much to the @goldenglobes for the incredible honor for 'Best Original Song.' Thank you and congrats to my co-writers @sonnen_blick @prodby24 @yuhanido_ IDO for being part of this incredible song."
Other songs from the film's soundtrack, including 'What It Sounds Like' and 'Soda Pop', were also big hits.
