Olivia Rodrigo tries to find 'The Cure' in new music video
The singer says 'The Cure' is a thesis statement for her new album, 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love'.
Olivia Rodrigo has released the second single from her upcoming album, 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love'.
The 23-year-old debuted The Cure' and its accompanying video on Friday, May 22. She co-wrote the song with American record producer Dan Nigro.
"This song means so much to me, and I’m so so so happy that it’s out in the world! Shout out to @dan_nigro for making it with me and being the best producer/songwriter in the game," she wrote on Instagram.
Rodrigo also reveals that 'The Cure' helped set the tone for the rest of her album.
"This song is the thesis statement of 'you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love', and it made the whole album click for me. I hope you enjoy it."
Creative director Jamie Gerin and director Cat Solen are the brains behind the singer's "brilliant" and "imaginative music video".
Rodrigo plays a nurse in the visuals, which amassed over one million views on YouTube in less than four hours. She works with other nurses to heal other people's hearts.
However, it soon becomes clear that her heart needs a cure. The video shows her walking through "the cold, sterile hallways of a handmade, cardboard hospital". She is trying to find the antidote for a broken heart.
"But my head is full of poison/And my heart is full of doubt/ I got toxins in my bloodstream/You tried hard to suck them out/And it feels like medication/ And it’s good for me I’m sure/ But it don’t matter how your love feels anymore/ It’ll never be the cure," she sings.
Fans are already speculating the meaning behind the emotional song.
"This song said ‘fix yourself first’ in the saddest way," one YouTuber commented.
Another user wrote: "A heartbreaking reminder that another person's love, no matter how strong, isn't enough to drain the poison from your own head."
Rodrigo has not shared the inspiration behind her new track, but she had poured cold water on a claim that it is about the English rock band The Cure.
"Honestly, this song, 'The Cure,' has nothing to do with the band. Although I love it so much, it just is a happy coincidence," she said on the 'Elvis Duran Show'.
'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love', the singer's third studio album, will be released on June 12.
The album's lead single, 'Drop Dead', debuted at #1 in America upon its April release.
