Media personality Oprah Winfrey has explained why she asked Meghan Markle one of the most talked-about questions from their bombshell 2021 interview.
Oprah Winfrey has revisited one of the most memorable moments from her interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
The 2021 tell-all interview shook the world, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opening up about their decision to step back from royal duties in March 2020.
During the conversation, Meghan spoke about her experience within the royal family, saying that she had always been outspoken and passionate about advocating for women's and human rights. However, Meghan explained that while she was a senior working royal, she was silent.
"I've always valued independence," the Duchess of Sussex told Oprah during the interview.
"I've always been outspoken, especially about women's rights. I mean, that's the sad irony of the last four years is, I've advocated for so long for women to use their voice, and then, I was silent," she added.
Oprah went on to ask: "Were you silent or were you silenced?"
"The latter," Meghan answered.
The interview went viral and sparked concern about the couple's experiences within the royal family.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Oprah explained why she felt it was important to ask the follow-up question. She said she wanted absolute clarity so that Meghan’s words could not be misinterpreted.
"I wanted to be clear, because was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk? I said it for clarification, because I didn't want later to hear, 'Well, no, it wasn't that. It really was that I was silenced. They wouldn’t let me talk.' So it was all for clarification."
