Argentine soccer star Lucas Trejo is mourning the death of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aarón and Ainhoa, following the devastating earthquakes.

The family of the Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira footballer was among scores of people who lost their lives after twin earthquakes struck the South American country last week, mere seconds apart.

The death toll has surpassed 1, 700 with tens of thousands more missing. The earthquakes also damaged over 58, 000 buildings.

"In this moment of immense sorrow, we offer our prayers for the eternal rest of their souls and for the strength of Lucas and his loved ones to face this tragedy," C.S. Marítimo de La Guaira wrote in Spanish.

"Lucas, you're not alone. Your family at Marítimo La Guaira is with you. We accompany you with all our hearts, with respect, unity and solidarity."

The club revealed in a separate post that two youth players, Ricardo Veloz and Victor Palacios, were also killed in the earthquakes.

According to several reports, Trejo was at a training camp in Caracas when the earthquakes hit and left immediately to be with his family. When he arrived, he found that the family's La Guaira home had been reduced to rubble.

His brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, told CNN that the 38-year-old spent three days combing through the rubble with the help of friends and family.

“What he found was a horrific scene, Ardiles said. “He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been," Ardiles said.

Numerous people and animals have been pulled alive from under the rubble, and Trejo hoped for a miracle.

Sadly, his worst fears were confirmed.

Final heartbreaking post

The final post on Maranella's Instagram page was a sweet message from Trejo.

He celebrated the mother of two in an Instagram Collab post that appeared on both their pages.

"Happy birthday, my love! May God richly bless your life and continue to fulfil the desires of your heart," he wrote in April.

"It is a blessing for us as a family to have you and to move forward in the purpose we have together! With you, everything is easier and more beautiful always."

Trejo concluded the words with seven beautiful words: "I love you yesterday, today and always!"

Instead of birthday messages, the post is now flooded with condolence messages.

The footballer has not spoken publicly about his family's passing.
