South Africa mourns legendary actor Seputla Sebogodi
Veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi, whose career spanned television, theatre and film, has died following complications related to diabetes.
South Africa is mourning the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi, whose remarkable career left a lasting mark on the country’s entertainment industry.
News of his passing was announced by Actor Spaces, which confirmed that the acclaimed actor died on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes.
He was 63.
In a statement, the organisation paid tribute to Sebogodi's legacy, saying:
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor Seputla Sebogodi, whose remarkable career shaped generations of South African storytelling. From unforgettable performances on television to a powerful presence on stage, his contribution to the arts leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone whose lives he touched."
The statement added that the Sebogodi family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing.
Sebogodi enjoyed a career spanning several decades and was best known for his memorable performances in television productions including 'Generations', 'Bophelo ke Semphego' where he played the character of Nkwesheng, 'Scandal!', ' The River', and 'Scandal'. He also built an impressive theatre career, appearing in acclaimed productions such as 'Big Dada', 'Waiting for Godot' and 'The Rivonia Trial', among many others.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa's finest performers, Sebogodi earned praise throughout his career for his exceptional talent and commanding presence on screen and on stage.
Amongst his surviving family members is Thapelo Sebogodi, who has also established himself as an actor in the South African film and television industry.
Following the announcement of his death, tributes have poured in across social media, with fans, fellow actors and public figures remembering Sebogodi as a phenomenal talent whose work inspired generations and helped shape South African storytelling. Many have also extended their condolences to his family, describing his passing as a significant loss to the country’s entertainment industry.
