The nominations for the MTV Movie Awards 2016 have been announced and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' leads the way with nods in 11 categories.

The nominations for the MTV Movie Awards 2016 have been announced and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' leads the way with nods in 11 categories.

Despite being omitted from most of the major categories at the Oscars and Golden Globes, the sci-fi blockbuster is in the running to take home a slew of top prizes from the annual ceremony including Movie of the Year.

In the category 'The Force Awakens' is up against 'Avengers: Age of Ultron', 'Creed', 'Deadpool', 'Jurassic World' and 'Straight Outta Compton'.

Notable nominations for the 'Star Wars' cast include Daisy Ridley being up Best Female Performance for her portrayal of Rey, John Boyega up for Best Action Performance for his turn as Finn, Adam Driver competing for Best Villain for his portrayal of Kylo Ren and Lupita Nyong'o acknowledged in the Best Virtual Performance list for her interpretation of CGI character Maz Kanata.

John and Daisy will be up against one another in the Breakthrough Performance category along with Amy Schumer, Brie Larson, Dakota Johnson and O'Shea Jackson Junior.

'Deadpool' is up for an impressive eight awards including Best Male Performance for lead star Ryan Reynolds, but if he wants to win it he's going to have to beat Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio - acknowledged again for his incredible performance in 'The Revenant' - 'Jurassic World' star Chris Pratt, 'The Martian' actor Matt Damon, Michael B. Jordan for 'Creed' and Will Smith for 'Concussion'. 

The star-studded event - which is celebrating its 25th year - will be hosted by 'Central Intelligence' co-stars Kevin Hart and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who are up for the Best Comedic Performance and Best Hero prizes respectively, and will be broadcast on MTV on April 10 at 8pm.
