The new Miss SA crown, called Enhle, was unveiled in Johannesburg on Tuesday night.

The crown is made of sterling silver, as opposed to platinum, containing amethyst, crystal and a very rare indigenous gem called sugilite.

Sugilite, also known as lavulite, is a relatively rare pink to purple stone found in the Wessels mine in Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

According to creator, Howard Friedman, it took them six months to complete the crown. It is valued at R200 000.

"This is significantly cheaper than the previous crown, Palesa, which was made entirely of Platinum," Friedman said.

He added that they opted for sterling silver as this would make the crown more accessible. The previous crown had to be worn under strict security and the reigning Miss SA had to be accompanied by a bodyguard at all times.

"This will ensure that South Africans get to see the crown, as it's less of a security risk," Friedman said.
