Although at the time of the screening he didn't share what his friends thought of his film, he has now revealed what Rihanna had to say about the film.

Speaking to E! News, Smith said Rihanna loved his film.

"Rihanna loved the cinematography," he told E! News.

"She could not get over the look of the film and how it felt," added Smith.

'Emancipation' is based on the true 1863 story of a former slave and it depicts the brutalities of American slavery.

Smith says it was important for him to do the film because he felt that "a lot of the patterns are starting to repeat themselves in America and the world today. So in terms of the timing, it felt like it was time for a reminder that we not go down on the same path".

He says he also wanted a film that would help people to cultivate compassion and empathy for one another.

"I wanted to create something with Antoine that was honest," said Will, adding that he also wanted "something that you wouldn't just forget when you walked out of the theatre. I think that level of emotional confront is important to be able to cultivate compassion and empathy for one another," he said.
