10 killed in Limpopo hit-and-run
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Ten people cutting up a dead hippopotamus were killed and five injured when a bakkie hit them near Nkambako village outside Tzaneen, Limpopo police said on Sunday.
Eight people were killed on the scene and two died on the way to hospital, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
The injured were taken to the Lethaba and Van Velden Hospitals.
He said the group found the dead animal, which had been hit by a truck, on the side of the road and were cutting up the carcass when they were struck.
Police had found the owner of the bakkie, but not the driver.
"We not sure if the driver is amongst those dead, injured, or on the run," Mulaudzi said.
An inquest docket was opened.
Earlier, ER24 paramedics said eight people had been killed and 12 injured.
