Twelve people have been killed in a crash involving a minibus and a truck near Wartburg, close to Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.
The horror crash, which occurred on the R33 in the early hours of Tuesday morning, left six others seriously injured.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says paramedics found the taxi upright in the middle of the road, while the overturned truck was on the side of the road.
"Fuel has begun to leak from the tanker, spilling on the road. Local authorities closed off the road while medics tended to the patients. Several were found lying scattered around the scene while two were found trapped in the taxi.
“On assessment, medics found that twelve people had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead.”
He says the patients were transported to various hospitals.
"Six other patients were assessed, two were in a critical condition while four others had sustained minor to serious injuries. The patients were treated and provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further care."
Provincial emergency services spokesperson Robert McKenzie says the cause of the crash is not yet known.
"The exact cause of the crash is not yet known at this stage and is going to be investigated by the police. Emergency services are still currently at the scene trying to clear the debris that has blocked the road.”
