16 cops to appear in court on drug charges
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The group, stationed at OR International Airport and the subject of a three-year investigation, will appear in court on various charges including racketeering, dealing in drugs, and defeating the ends of justice.
Twelve were arrested on Friday, four handed themselves over to authorities at the weekend while one is in self-isolation.
They were nabbed by the Hawks following a tip-off about a drug syndicate operating at the airport.
"The officers are alleged to have been stealing drugs confiscated from drug mules at the OR Tambo International Airport,” says spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng Phindi Mjonondwane.

“It is alleged their actions resulted in these drug mules being charged with possession of drugs of lesser weight and such actions were detrimental to the administration of justice.”
