17 000 learners still need to be placed in Gauteng

The Department of Education in Gauteng says some 17 000 learners still don't have a desk ahead of the opening of schools on Wednesday.
The department's Elijah Mhlanga says Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi confirmed on Monday that 17 000 learners still need to be placed at schools around the province.
"The MEC for Education in Gauteng is committed that the learners will be placed because district offices are open today to prepare for an influx of parents requesting for assistance."
Mhlanga says the department is ready for the 2019 school year and the department presented their report last year to the portfolio committee on basic education in Parliament.
Applications for placement in 2020 will be open from April.

Mhlanga urged parents not to apply late application cause unnecessary chaos for the department.
"We urge parents that in April we will be reopening the applications process again and we want people to apply in time.
"The late applications are unnecessary and cause unnecessary chaos which delays the actual start of teaching and learning in our schools."
