185 motorists arrested for drunk driving across City of Johannesburg
Drunk driving remains a problem in Johannesburg with at least 185 motorists arrested over the past seven days.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol across several suburbs between 13 and 19 October.
"JMPD's visible presence and ongoing roadblocks effectively took drunk drivers off the roads, reinforcing their strict stance against reckless behavior that endangers public safety," Fihla said.
In a recent media release, JMPD also issued a strong warning to individuals caught driving under the influence. The statement emphasized that those who operate a vehicle while impaired or recklessly will be apprehended by officers enforcing traffic laws.
Fihla urged all drivers to prioritize road safety by planning alternate travel arrangements if they consume alcohol and to follow the rules of the road.
He also encouraged motorists to always carry proper vehicle and license documentation.
