2016 Tax season kicks off
Updated | By MornéJK
With just six weeks to go to the end of tax season 2016, the South African Revenue Service already received more than 4 million individual income tax returns.
SARS confirmed in a statement that over a million of these returns were submitted via eFiling, while the rest were submitted electronically at a SARS branch by taxpayers who prefer face-to-face interaction.
"SARS wishes to encourage taxpayers to submit their tax returns via eFiling. In fact, this helps avoid standing in long queues at SARS branches. Most importantly, eFiling is quick, easy and can be done from anywhere as long as you have secure internet access," a statement read.
The Revenue Service did however warn against fraud and phishing scams, where criminals try to gain access to tax payers' banking details by sending emails pretending to be SARS officials.

"SARS will never ask for personal, tax banking or eFiling details (passwords, login information, etc) via phone or email. Taxpayers will also never be asked to log into the eFiling website from a link in an email," it said.
Tax Season 2016 will end for non-provisional taxpayers on 25 November 2016 and SARS has urged all those who have not yet submitted their return to do so as soon as possible.
