Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has welcomed the reopening of several post office branches across the country that were temporarily closed following extensive negotiations with landlords.
A total of 27 branches have been reopened in all nine provinces.
The remaining branches are expected to reopen as soon as an agreement is reached with property owners.
“Negotiations continue with landlords of the remaining few Post Offices that are closed,” Ndabeni-Abrahams said in a statement.
She added the recent CEO appointment will boost efforts to turn the state-owned enterprise.
Nomkhita Mona was appointed for a 5-year term.
“The Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies, as the shareholder, continues to work closely with the Post Office to strengthen the executive management of the entity.”
Ndabeni-Abrahams believes the SOE is already making some progress.
“The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent economic downturn had a marked effect on the revenues of the Post Office,” she said.
“The Post Office has implemented long-term initiatives to diversify its income. These have started to show results, and the Post Office has also identified quick solutions that will improve its income in the short-term.”
