Spokesman Brigadier Vish Naidoo on Monday said 1000 of the applications came from former police detectives.

”Since this plan was announced two months ago, the SAPS has received 2800 applications from former police officers by the closing date of 15 June 2015,” Naidoo said.

”From these applications the SAPS aims to appoint former constables, sergeants, warrant officers and lieutenants to posts in the detective service and visible policing divisions, the two environments within the SAPS that need capacity.”

Applicants who left the service while a disciplinary matter was pending against them would not be considered.

“Those with criminal records will not be considered at all. We will not compromise quality for quantity. Only those with a commendable track record of good performance and a clean disciplinary record will be re-enlisted,” said national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega.

The applicants would be vetted and their fingerprints checked to ensure that none of them have criminal records.

Naidoo said re-enlistment boards will be convened in all provinces with representation from police headquarters to consider applications and make final recommendations to a human resources committee for consideration.

The plan was to finalise the process by the end of November, he said. -ANA
