3 Tshwane metro cops killed by ‘drunk driver’

The crash took place on the N4 between Transoranje Road and Rebecca Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"At around 02:00, officers spotted a vehicle driving recklessly and facing oncoming traffic in the Pretoria CBD. The officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled and officers gave chase,” metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba says.

"The officers called for back-up and they were joined in the chase by a TMPD (Tshwane Metro Police Department) team which was in the area where the vehicle was heading.

"The back-up team crashed head-on with the vehicle that was being pursued and the three TMPD officers that were inside the vehicle all died on the scene."

The driver of the vehicle also died on the scene.  

"He was driving with a lady passenger who was transported to the nearest hospital," says Mahamba.

"Empty and full alcohol bottles were found in the suspect's vehicle and a case of culpable homicide has been opened.”

The identities of the three officers will be released as soon as their families have been informed.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni's William Ntladi, community members alerted emergency services to the blaze on Saturday morning. "They found the community frantically trying to extinguish the blaze," says Ntladi. The bodies of the 2-year-old and 4-year-old children were found in what remained of the shack.
