More than 70 pupils at an Eastern Cape school in Port St Johns were rushed to hospital on Friday following suspected poisoning.
While the details of the incident are still sketchy, it’s understood it happened in the vicinity of the Nkangala Senior Secondary School.
The provincial Education Department says investigations are underway.
“We are away that the kids were allegedly poisoned by a passer-by,” says provincial Education spokesperson Mali Mtimba.
“The MEC should be visiting the families soon - between today and tomorrow he should be landing there.”
Mtimba adds they are being attended to at various healthcare facilities in the region, including the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.
“A case has been opened with the police and we are hoping that the investigation will be fast-tracked and we are hoping that who is responsible for this malicious things can be brought to book.”
