SAPS Ad Hoc committee concerned over 'premature' media reports of exonerations
Updated | By Emile Pienaar
The Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Nhlahla Mhkwanazi, has noted with concern 'misleading' media reports which suggested that individuals have been cleared of wrongdoing.
The chairperson of the committee, Soviet Lekganyane, said these claims were 'premature, irrational and gullible.'
He said that during the committee's meeting on Tuesday, deliberations on a draft preliminary report had just begun and that no conclusions were drawn.
He added that the committee simply considered inputs from members.
"The committee’s adoption of the report will only happen two or more weeks after it has been shared with affected parties," said the committee spokesperson Malatswa Molepo.
Lekganyane likened the media reports to 'putting the cart before the horse.'
"Lekganyane appealed to members of the public to have confidence in the committee and in Parliament to act in their best interests in the quest to safeguard South Africa’s criminal justice system and to ensure robust oversight is conducted," said Molepo.
Molepo added that once the committee concluded its process, the National Assembly Speaker will announce the outcome of the investigation.
