AfriForum slams ‘irrational, reckless’ firearm legislation, heads to court
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Lobby group AfriForum has vowed to fight proposed amendments to the country’s firearm legislation.

The new proposed legislation states that no firearm licence may be issued for the purpose of self-defence.
The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service (CSP) published a call for public comment on a draft of the Firearms Control Amendment Bill in the Government Gazette on Friday.
The draft law seeks to "provide for the applicant for a firearm [licence] to provide a valid reason for possessing a firearm”.

AfriForum’s Marnus Kamfer says the proposed amendments are irrational and reckless.
“Especially since this draft takes away the ability of citizens to possess a firearm for self-defence purposes. Furthermore it appears that sport shooters and hunters will also come off second best with the proposed amendments.
“AfriForum will soon introduce a campaign to fight these draconic amendments to the firearm legislation.”
