RETRENCHMENTS AT GLENCORE - Glencore's Eland Platinum Mine has started with a retrenchment process, with up to 900 workers at the mine near Brits in the North West now facing job losses. 


The company's spokesperson, Gugulethu Maqetuka, says they have already engaged with the unions at the mine on the decision to go ahead with the process...


 


NUM NICKEL DEAL - The National Union of Mineworkers has signed a three year wage deal at the Nkomati Nickel Mine in Mpumalanga. 


The deal follows a three day strike which started on Sunday evening. 


The NUM's William Mabapa says their members are happy with the new deal, which includes a bigger bonus pay-out and salary increases of between 8 and 10 percent for the next three years...


 


FARM MURDERS - The South African Human Rights Commission says it couldn't make a finding that farm attacks are racially motivated. 


The commission released its third report into the safety, security and other challenges faced by farming communities. 


148 farm attacks and 33 murders have been recorded since the start of the year. 


While the report found that not much has changed in 17 years, Commissioner Danny Titus stated that there was no evidence that attacks were based on race...


 


SPECIAL VISITOR FOR TUTU - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been paid a special visit in hospital by Cape Town Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba...



The 83 year-old Tutu will stay in hospital for another two weeks after being put on a new course of antibiotics as part of his treatment for inflammation. 


It's the world icon's third visit to a Cape Town hospital in the last few weeks. The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation says the Arch is in good spirits and not in any pain.
