The US released a statement on Wednesday confirming that President Donald Trump has extended AGOA until the end of the year, with retroactive effect from September 2025.

A cornerstone of US-Africa trade relations for 25 years, AGOA has allowed the United States to buy billions of dollars of duty-free cars, clothes and other items from select African countries each year.

But with the Trump administration broadly hostile to free trade deals, it expired on September 30.

The new extension came with fresh demands and fell far short of the multi-year renewal that many African businesses wanted.

"AGOA for the 21st century must demand more from our trading partners and yield more market access for US businesses, farmers, and ranchers," said US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in a statement.

However, Tau believes the extension offers renewed hope for continued engagement with the US.

“That creates a platform for us to continue engaging with the US Senate and Congress about how AGOA would plan out going forward, what the structure would be, and essentially how we would continue to work around AGOA.”

He added that while the extension brings some confidence, uncertainty remains for businesses planning beyond the end of the year.

“It’s difficult for businesses to plan for something that's over the next eight months with the uncertainty of what comes in the next years, but that's something that we'll have to work out with the US.”
