All learners will be placed in schools: Makhura
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has given the assurance that all learners will be given a spot in a classroom for 2017.
The school year kicked off with some 40 000 learners still not placed this morning.
"This is where the problem is - parents want to prefer a particular school," says Makhura.
Makhura says parents have been rejecting the placement offers at schools they did not submit as their first preference.
"We can't place 10 000 learners in one school because the parents only want their children in that school," says Makhura.
Makhura, along with Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi officially opened the Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela Primary School in Braamfisherville, Soweto.
Lesufi says over 1300 learners from the 40 000 on the waiting list will be starting at this new smart school.
"Next month, just a kilometre away from here, we are preparing to open another school that will take almost 1300 learners," says Lesufi.
