ANC caucus won’t be drawn into claims MP Xiaomei Havard ‘a Chinese spy’

The African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus says it is aware of the damning claims against its MP Xiaomei Havard.
This follows an exclusive report by News24 citing a leaked intelligence report accusing Havard of being a Chinese spy.
The report by the State Security Agency alleges there is a “high likelihood” that the ANC MP could be sharing classified information about South Africa with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
On Wednesday, ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina distanced the party from the report.
“The Office wishes to place it on the record that it is not privy to such intelligence reports and is not an accredited service provider in intelligence matters.
“It neither has the investigative capabilities to deal with such matters and is thus unable to comment on the authenticity nor veracity of these purported reports. We therefore do not wish to encroach on the line functions of authorised agencies and are not at liberty to comment.” Majodina added.
It’s not the first time Havard’s credibility has been called into question.
The politician, a former Chinese citizen, took up a seat at the National Assembly at the start of the year, replacing the late Jackson Mthembu who succumbed to Covid-19 related complications.
Havard’s rise to the Chambers sparked a fierce debate about who should be allowed to run for office in South Africa.
