ANC denies ‘a lack of support’ for Ramaphosa

The African National Congress (ANC) has denied reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa is not receiving support from senior ANC leaders during the party’s election campaign.

The ANC briefed the media on the party’s 30-day plan ahead of the elections at its Luthuli House headquarters on Monday.

The party’s head of elections Fikile Mbalula described reports that President Ramaphosa is campaigning alone as ‘fabricated propaganda’.

“If you say the president is a loner, what do you mean? Because the president is the face of the ANC campaign and the media is interested in the face and what the face of the campaign says. Now, if you say the president is a loner it’s not only a distortion, but a deliberate poor fabricated propaganda to portray the president as campaigning on his own without the entire leadership.”

It comes amid continued reports of an ANC divided between the supporters of Ramaphosa and those of former president Jacob Zuma.

It has been rumoured that ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, who is a known ally of Zuma, has tampered with the parliamentary party lists.

However, Magashule has denied these claims.

The ANC has come under severe criticism for its party lists, which has seen it receive objections to at least 30 names.

These include Bathabile Dlamini, Malusi Gigaba and Nomvula Mokonyane.

The objections have since been referred to the party’s integrity committee.

Party spokesperson Dakota Legoete says the committee is dealing with the issue.
