ANC in Ekurhuleni raps Masina over knuckles for controversial tweets

The party’s regional executive committee met on Tuesday to discuss the Ekurhuleni mayor’s controversial tweets.

Masina has already been rebuked by the national ANC after he expressed support for Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s view on the collapse of the "white economy"

In a string of tweets, he also dared the governing party to fire him for his views.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ANC’s regional spokesperson Sonnyboy Masingi said it was made clear to Masina that collapsing the economy is not ANC policy.  

“The REC expressed a firm view that discussions on economic policies or any other policy content must be articulated in line and consistent with the ANC policy positions, principles and constitutional prescripts.

"On the same note, the REC is of the view that the ANC-led government must continue to advance radical socio-economic transformation in an effort to change the economic landscape and the unjust imbalances that continue to be visibly prevalent in the country.”

At the same time Masina retracted his threat to resign.

"This was at the backdrop of the confidence shown to the leadership displayed by Cde Mzwandile Masina, both as a political head and the Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni," Masingi added.

Meanwhile, the ANC provincial executive committee has also reiterated its warning members and leaders who continue to engage in public spats and publicly contradict policies and decisions of the organisation.

Masina expressed support for nationalisation and dared his party to fire him for his "radical views". His Twitter accounts has since been deactivated. Malema, who is seen as a close ally of the Ekurhuleni mayor, subsequently alluded on Twitter that Masina's account was suspended by the ANC.
