ANC introduces interviews for mayoral candidates

The party national executive committee (NEC) met over the weekend to finalize and approve its list of candidates for the municipal elections.

Parties are in the race to meet the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) submission deadline of 23 August. 

The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced its mayoral candidates on Wednesday.

Party leader John Steenhuisen challenged the ANC to do the same.

But the governing party's Dakota Legoete said the ANC will announce its candidates once all the party processes are completed. 

"All regions will recommend three names which will be tabled to the provincial executive committee. The committee will do a final recommendation, we have now included a new process of interviews to check the capabilities and capacities of those we are going to be deployed as mayors," he said.

Legoete said the candidates with an understanding of governance, ethics, and municipal finances will be the final candidates.

"As it is, for now, we have concluded our list process for councilors which were ratified over the weekend by the NEC. What is left now is for all structures, regions, and provinces to recommend three names for mayors. It is our intention that this process must be completed before we go to elections so that we can make the candidates public.”

Legoete added the ANC is not opposed to public debates, as suggested by the DA, he said this could be done at a local level where the party can sell its manifesto.
