ANC in Joburg calls on Gordhan ‘to act on Eskom’s anti-township stance’

The party has blamed the lower voter turnout in the local government elections on factionalism within the party, the July unrest and continuing load shedding by Eskom.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg says the constant rolling blackouts are harming the creation of jobs in the city and township economies.

The party has blamed the lower voter turnout in the local government elections on factionalism within the party, the July unrest and continuing load shedding by Eskom.

Regional spokesperson Sasabona Manganye says Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan should act on Eskom's anti-townships stance.

“We have witnessed deliberate conduct of Eskom that paints the state as incapable of generating and supplying electricity, not only harming our already limping economy. It has racialised electricity distribution whereby townships and predominantly black areas like Soweto, Orange Farm, and Ivory Park have load rotation imposed on them.

“Eskom is at its worst performing state based on the number of plant failures and frequency of the load-shedding. It is evident that Eskom lacks relevant skills and competencies to ensure that it maintains the uninterrupted and sustainable supply of electricity.”
