ANC: Members must avoid running to courts

The African National Congress (ANC) has resolved to create stronger structures within the party to resolve conflict.

The decision was made during policy discussions at the 54th national conference in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.

Various ANC decisions have recently been the subject of legal challenges. Disgruntled members are also threatening legal action to challenge the 68 unaccounted ballots at the conference.

Chairperson of the committee on constitutional amendments, Dr Mathole Motshekga, briefed the media on Thursday.

"The issue was really that the diputes arise within the organisation. And the organisation has got to settle those issues internally. Because even if you head to the courts of law, the courts will want to know whether you have exhausted internal remedies. So that was really settling a position which is well settled in the ANC," said Motshekga.

Motshekga was asked whether the ANC has adequate mechanisms to deal with conflicts internally.

"Capacity is something that you create and I think that the organisation has the ability to create capacity where capacity is needed," he said.

Motshekga also said conference had agreed  to reduce the size of the National Executive Committee (NEC) from 80 to 60 members.
