ANC MP wants murder charges dropped
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
ANC MP Sibusiso Kula is accused of stabbing his wife Jennifer Mothlomi to death at their North West home in November last year.
Kula, who has been granted bail of R50 000, has now applied to the Orkney Magistrate’s Court to have the charges against him dropped.
A spokesperson for the NPA Henry Mamothame says Kula claims his rights were not explained to him at the time of the arrest.
“The defence brought forward an application to have the murder charges struck off the court roll. They argued that his rights were not explained to him, and thus can be used against him in a subsequent trial. They further questioned the charges levelled against their client”.
Mamothame says the State views the application as “an attempt by the accused to avoid trial on the murder case that he is faced with”.
Kula will be back in court on 22 May, where judgment is expected to be passed.
Last month, Kula agreed to step aside from all ANC provincial activities while the case against him proceeds.
