ANC reiterates call for peaceful negotiations between Russia, Ukraine

The ANC has reiterated its belief that the United Nations should aim for peaceful negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
It's been eight days since Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine.
On Wednesday, 193 member states held an emergency session of the UN General Assembly.
A total of 141 states voted in favour of the resolution that demands Russia’s immediate withdrawal from Ukraine.
South Africa was amongst 35 member states that abstained – including China, India, Iran and Pakistan.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says the party’s national working committee believe the UN Security Council should call for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution.
The committee held a meeting on Monday.
“It reaffirmed the ANC’s conviction that international relations should be underpinned by a commitment to development, democracy, human rights, peace and security, in line with the clarion call by the Freedom Charter," says Mabe.
"It expressed its abhorrence at the suffering caused to ordinary people in every country that is involved, either directly or indirectly, in this conflict and called upon progressive formations globally to ensure that any harm to civilians invites appropriate repercussions in line with the values of a humane, just, equitable, democratic, and free world."
