ANC rejects Mathabatha's step aside move as Limpopo chair
The African National Congress (ANC) has rejected Limpopo provincial chairperson Stanley Mathabatha’s intention to step aside from his position.
This follows a high-level meeting on Thursday between ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) deployees, and the Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the meeting considered Mathabatha’s letter of intention but resolved that the matter should first be dealt with internally at provincial level.
“The meeting resolved to reject the provincial chairperson’s step-aside intention; to refer the matter back to the province, allowing space for issues raised by the provincial chairperson to be addressed internally and for a resolution to be found,” Bhengu explained.
She added that once the provincial structures had concluded their deliberations, the outcome would be communicated formally to national officials.
Mathabatha, who has served as Limpopo chairperson since 2014, sent a letter to Mbalula earlier this week outlining his reasons for stepping aside. In the letter, he raised concerns about alleged misconduct and what he described as “un-ANC conduct” at the Vhembe and Waterberg regional conferences.
However, the ANC has dismissed these claims, stating that all regional conferences in Limpopo had been “concluded successfully.”
The party’s decision effectively places the responsibility back on the provincial structures to resolve tensions, while Mathabatha remains in his position for now.
