ANC set to celebrate 108 years in controversy-ridden NC municipality

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape has acknowledged the dire state of Sol Plaatjie Local Municipality in Kimberly ahead of the province hosting the party's 108th birthday celebration.

This comes after the suspension of Sol Plaatjie's municipal manager, Goolam Akharwaray, and Chief Financial Officer, Lydia Mahloko, over allegations of maladministration.

The party will be convening in Kimberly this weekend to commemorate 108 years of existence and for the party’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, to deliver its annual policy statement, known as the January 8 statement.

Ramaphosa will visit the gravesite of late ANC leader Sol Plaatjie on Wednesday as part of the programme.

ANC provincial leaders, together with the party’s national leaders briefed the media on Monday regarding poor service delivery in Sol Plaatjie municipal district ahead of the planned celebrations on Saturday.

ANC Northern Cape Secretary, Deshi Ngxanga said investigations have been concluded and disciplinary action will be taken against the suspended officials.

"The municipal manager is still on suspension (and) there is a report that disciplinary action must be taken against him," said Ngxanga.

ANC national spokesperson, Dakota Legoete has denounced suggestions that the planned celebration bash on Saturday is an excuse to squander resources.

“People think we are here for a bash – it’s actually a pilgrimage to recommit ourselves to the values, the norms, and the work of the ANC” said Legoete.
