ANC wants to build 'high speed' train from Joburg to Musina
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The ANC in Gauteng and Limpopo have agreed on the need for a high-speed train to operate between the two provinces.
This follows a meeting held earlier this week between the two provincial executive committees.
The meeting outcomes tasked the Gauteng and Limpopo provincial governments to urgently make plans to ensure that the idea is realised.
In a statement, the party says this will assist in reducing road carnage on the roads, especially on the notorious N1.
"The high-speed train will also make the movement of goods and services between the two provinces and the broader SADC region easier. The officials view the establishment of the high-speed train as a critical foundation for the realisation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which was conceptualised in 2012 to enhance trade integration on the continent.
"The high-speed train will contribute significantly to the industrialisation of Musina, a gateway into the SADC region."
In 2019, Limpopo roads and community safety MEC, Namane Masemola, said he wants to introduce a high-speed train between Musina and Johannesburg but the idea remains a pipedream.
In 2019 President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the initiative during his State of the Nation address as an alternative mode of transport between SA and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
