ANC wants official funeral for MEC, Veteran
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
The ANC in Limpopo will ask government to ensure that late education MEC Thembi Nwendamutswu and ANC veteran Nelson Diale get official funerals.
Nwendamutswu died in a private hospital in Pretoria on Friday. Diale died in Jane Furse, Limpopo, on Thursday.
ANC provincial secretary Knocks Seabi said on Tuesday the party had postponed a 103rd anniversary celebration, scheduled to be held in Lulekani, to mourn the two.
Spokeswoman Khumbuzo Ntshavheni declined to discuss Nwendamutswu's replacement as they were still in mourning.
Nwendamutswu was praised for helping to help fill the ANC's provincial coffers after it was reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy last year.
Nwendamutswu was appointed to the education portfolio following last year's general elections and served for seven months.
Before she became the ANC's provincial treasurer, Nwendamutswu was part of the provincial task team deployed in the province.
Premier Stan Mathabatha described Diale as a struggle veteran who sacrificed his life for the ruling party.
He said Diale joined the ANC in 1956, and never ceased to serve the ANC, even when he was arrested in 1964 and spent 10 years on Robben Island.
