Arms cache found on Limpopo farm
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Police in Limpopo have launched an investigation following the discovery of a large amount of ammunition at the Mooiklip farm outside Polokwane on Wednesday.
It is alleged that farm workers were ploughing potatoes when they discovered six boxes containing 7560 rounds of R1 rifle ammunition and one rifle grenade.
"It is reported that the farmer who is currently using the field has leased it from the owner for producing crops for a certain period,” said police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba.
"The police sought intervention from the bomb disposal unit to defuse the ammunition and the grenade. The said ammunition and a grenade will be sent to the Firearm Ballistics Unit for Forensic investigations. "
Police have appealed to the public to assist with any information to trace the suspects responsible.
