Association proposes alphabetical sales as SA prepares to buy booze again

As the country gears up for the possible sale of alcohol under level three of the lockdown regulations, the Liquor Traders Association has proposed that it be sold according to people’s surnames.

The association believes this would prevent a massive surge of people at liquor stores around the country.

Alcohol sales will be allowed again under level 3 lockdown restrictions, which President Cyril Ramaphosa said is likely to happen before the end of the month.

The association, which represents over 400 members, says this will only apply during the first week of alcohol sales to combat the initial demand.

Spokesperson Sean Robinson says they have proposed that people whose surnames start with A through to M should shop on the Monday and Thursday.

Those whose surnames begin with N to Z will be able to buy first on Tuesday and Thursday.

“This proposal is for the first week of unbanning. On Friday and Saturday anyone should be allowed to shop,” he says.

The liquor association says it has also made proposals on how liquor stores can be better prepared for the expected influx of consumers.

“For the first week we need to have a full staff complement to assist speed up the transaction and the amount of time that the person spends at the store. We need to increase security in the store and outside to manage queing  outside the store,” says Robinson.
