Athol Trollip new mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

The first council meeting in the Nelson Mandela Bay was marred by disruptions from the opposition benches on Thursday morning.
The DA's Athol Trollip was officially announced as the Nelson Mandela Bay mayor on Thursday morning.
Following the announcement, the ANC caucus walked out.
On Wednesday, the DA announced it had formed a coalition with the ACDP, UDM and Cope.
The group now has the numbers, to govern the metro.
The EFF said it would not enter into a coalition with any party, but confirmed it would back the DA in a bid to ensure the ANC loses its power.
Trollip takes over from the ANC's Danny Jordaan.
Speaking at the council meeting on Thursday, Trollip said the DA would take a strong position against corruption in this municipality.
He said the party aims to set a new standard of better governance and service delivery.
"This is an incredibly exciting time in our political history, as we begin a new phase of multi-party endeavour to free ourselves from the impact of decades-long maladministration and corruption," he said.
Coalition governance has become a phenomenon across the world and is fast shaping the contemporary South African political landscape, he said.
