Attacks on healthcare workers have ‘far-reaching’ consequences, warns SAMA

The South African Medical Association has called on the Department of Health and the police to increase safety measures at healthcare facilities across the country.
The call comes after two people with armed bodyguards allegedly stormed a casualty ward at Themba Hospital in Mpumalanga last week.
They allegedly assaulted medical staff while demanding medical assistance.
The incident led to fed-up community members protesting outside the hospital, calling for authorities to intervene.
SAMA chairperson Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa says medical practitioners play a vital role in society.
“The South African Medical Association unequivocally condemns the escalating acts of violence against medical practitioners and other healthcare workers. The impact of such behaviour is severe and far-reaching.
“As victims of such violence, healthcare workers suffer from physical injuries, psychological trauma and emotional distress, with some incidents tragically resulting in death. These attacks contribute to burnout, reduced productivity, impaired decision making and mental illness. They are very costly to this country,” added Mzukwa.
