Pretoria man faces attempted murder charge for allegedly infecting partner with HIV
A man from Boschkop in Tshwane has been charged for attempted murder after he allegedly deliberately infected his partner with HIV.
The 47-year-old appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where the matter was postponed to next Monday for bail information.
It’s alleged that the accused was in a relationship with the 38-year-old complainant from October last year until June, when he misrepresented his status to her, saying he was HIV negative.
“On 26 June 2026, it is alleged that the complainant discovered antiretroviral (ARV) medication in the accused’s bag and confronted him about it. The accused allegedly admitted that he was HIV positive and informed her that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to be with another person,” explained National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.
It’s reported that a month after the incident, the woman underwent HIV testing and found that she was HIV positive.
She reported the matter to the police a day after receiving her results, leading to the man’s arrest.
Two years ago, the same court sentenced former South African National Defense Force special forces operator Leon Santos Conga to life imprisonment for the rape and attempted murder of his former partner.
In 2018, Afriforum's private prosecution unit took the case of Antoinette Ndishishi, who accused Conga of failing to disclose his HIV status and knowingly infecting her with the virus.
