Matriculants wrote their first English exams on Wednesday.

The department's spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says there were only a few minor incidents on the day.

"We are happy with this day, things went well indeed. We expected some social unrests to create some problems for us especially in the North West and KwaZulu-Natal, but it all went well."

Lesufi visited Parktown Boys' High School on Wednesday to oversee the start of the exams with learners writing the English First paper. Wednesday is day one of the matriculants' final exams. Lesufi says the week leading up to the exams the department held engagements with various stakeholders to ensure that timetable remained solid.

Over 790,000 pupils have registered for this year's final exams.

Some subjects have already been written but matrics experienced disruptions last week after Eskom implemented load shedding, citing capacity constraints.

The department is yet to announce a new date for pupils to rewrite the exam.
