Benoni fire station damaged by protestors

Emergency services in Ekurhuleni have been affected by a protest in the area.
Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi says the fire station in Benoni was damaged this morning.
"At around 08:15 am this morning, members of the community marching along Harpur Road and Liverpool Street damaged the Benoni Fire Brigade Services, bringing the station`s operation to stand still," says Ntladi.
Ntladi says stones and various objects were used to break newly-revamped machine bay doors and office windows.
"According to the information we have, the marchers were from Actonville on their way to the Customer Care Centre in the CBD," says Ntladi.
Ntladi says emergency operations have been suspended until the situation is normalised.
"Temporary contingency plans have been put in place in case of any eventualities that might arise around the operational jurisdiction. The surrounding fire brigade services in Brakpan, Farrarmere and Boksburg are being put on standby for swift interventions," says Ntladi.
"Due to distances to be travelled from such, our response time will be highly affected."
