Parliament welcomes speedy appointment of Hawks head
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the decision by Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula to appoint a new acting Hawks boss.
Former deputy head of the unit Yolisa Matakata will lead the unit for the foreseeable future.
The committee's chairperson Francois Beukman said the speedy appointment will avoid a leadership vacuum at the elite crime fighting unit.
"We are confident that Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata will add value to the fight against organised crime and corruption.
"The committee will monitor developments with regard to the appointment of a permanent head of the Hawks and discuss this in upcoming committee meetings," Beukman said.
Matakata's appointment follows a ruling by the North Gauteng High Court, declaring the appointment of Major-General Berning Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks unlawful and invalid.
