Beyond the Spotlight: Chester Williams
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
Rugby catapulted him into the spotlight and with rugby he will always stay.
Chester Williams winged his way into South African hearts as one of the star players in the 1995 Rugby World Cup squad that won the trophee and helped heal South Africa after apartheid.
Nicknamed "The Black Pearl", Williams was the first non-white player to be included in the Springbok squad since his uncle Avril Williams and Errol Tobias in the early 1980s.
Williams has remained true to his love and is now spreading his talent amongst young varsity players.
He admits - for him there will never be any other alternative than his involvement with the game.
And when he isn't running between the posts, his wife and sons keep him on his toes at home in Cape Town, where he admits a daily family meeting is just as important as a good team talk.
