It has been detected at four poultry farms in the province so far.

The provincial Department of Agriculture’s spokesperson Ivan Meyer says the infected farms are near Worcester, Malmesbury and Hopefield.

"Approximately 134 000 birds have died have been culled to date.

"While poultry meat and eggs are safe to eat, the Western Cape's Department of Agriculture urges people to be vigilant.

"Usual mortality to birds should be reported to the local veterinarians," says Meyer.

The bird flu outbreak was first detected in Gauteng last month.

At least two farms in the East Rand have been affected.
