BMA, SARS clearing cargo backlog at Lebombo border
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Border Management Authority (BMA) said on Saturday, that cargo operations at the Lebombo border post have resumed, following the partial reopening of the border.
The closure of the port of entry led to cargo backlogs on both sides.
The border was closed earlier this week due to safety concerns, following post-election unrest in Mozambique.
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said they are working with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to clear the backlog.
"The port is now open for cargo movement,” she says, “after the Mozambican authorities managed to address challenges with their systems, to facilitate processing through the Ressano Garcia port of entry into Mozambique."
She adds that “the initial reopening of the port, was to manage the movement of persons, but this morning the Mozambican authorities worked tirelessly to address cargo systems for smooth border processing."
Mogotsi however reminds travelers to remain cautious when visiting the country, and urges them to stay informed of travel updates.
