Bonginkosi Madikizela resigns as DA provincial leader, Western Cape MEC

Bonginkosi Madikizela has resigned as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape.

His resignation comes two weeks after his qualifications were interrogated.
The opposition party launched a probe after a media report exposed Madikizela for falsifying his CV – claiming he had graduated from Unisa in 1999 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
The party labelled Madikizela’s decision to resign as “honourable”.
“We wish to thank Bonginkosi for his service as party leader since his election to the position of DA Leader in the Western Cape in 2018. Bonginkosi served as the leader for more than three years,” said Jaco Londt, the DA’s provincial chairperson.
“We respect his decision and the honourable route he has taken by stepping down as leader. This shows the clear difference between the DA and the ANC.”
Albert Fritz will remain the acting provincial leader until the Party elects an interim leader at the end of next month.
Madikizela will also no longer serve on the provincial cabinet.
“Today, Mr Bonginkosi Madikizela tendered his resignation from the Western Cape Cabinet, which I have accepted. I believe that his decision under the circumstances was the right and honourable thing to do,” said Western Cape Premier Alan Winde on Wednesday.
“Mr Madikizela has worked hard in both the Human Settlements and Transport & Public Works portfolios, and I wish to thank him for the valuable contribution he has made to delivering progress in our province over the years.”
Tertuis Simmers will continue to act as MEC of Transport and Public Works.
