Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) is ahead of its motherbody when is endorsed its candidate to lead the ANC.

Mathekga's analysis comes after the ANCWL officially endorsed Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for the ANC Presidency at this years elective conference.

Unity was a key theme at the ANC's birthday bash, but that seems to have been disregarded by the ANCWL.

It broke with party tradition by officially naming their preferred candidate.

Mathekga says this was a brave move by the league and that the ANC needs to change the way it approaches leadership transition.

Mathekga says ANC members must openly compete against one another for leadership positions instead of lobbying in secret

"My view is that the ANCWL seems to be ahead of the ANC. It might be for the wrong reasons, but it seems to be ahead. Playing open cards regarding leadership is much better than the secrecy that has shrouded this process of nominations and the clandestine way in which other members are lobbying for nominations," says Mathekga.
